Small Town, Big Events

Independent,
Original Battle

Named to commemorate the most famous conflict on English soil, this compact market town grew up alongside the 1066 battle site with its tranquil medieval abbey and ancient woodlands – largely unchanged to this day.

Throughout the centuries we’ve hosted Normans and Saxons, gunpowder plotters and rock stars. Beautiful, big-hearted Battle: it’s yours to conquer.

Battle's Place in History

1066 Battle of Hastings
This is where England, as we know it, began. Discover how one decisive battle changed the course of history, bringing Norman rule to England and reshaping its language, culture, power, and place in the medieval world.
Dissolution of the Monasteries
Battle Abbey, founded by William I, was a major Benedictine centre throughout the Middle Ages. Under royal control, it became one of the first monasteries dissolved by Henry VIII, its wealth stripped away and the estate granted to his trusted ally, Sir Antony Browne.
Gunpowder Plot
Battle’s links to the 1605 plot are complex. The area was known for producing high-quality gunpowder, and the Abbey’s Catholic owner employed none other than Guy Fawkes, a connection that helped drive townspeople to distance themselves and later form one of Sussex’s earliest bonfire societies
